Doorways

First posted 1st September 2006

The daily photobloggers have a theme day once a month. Todays theme is ‘doorways’. This is a shot of the Victorian Arts Centre front doors taken just last night. Three theatres are located inside, all of which are underground for better acoustics. The spire above this wonderful entrance can be seen here. The inside of this building is absolutely wonderful as well, with much polished metal, velvet, lush carpets and great light features.

Stillness

First posted 2nd December 2006

I have shown a wider shot of this lovely river previously here. This closer shot, taken at the same time shows the lovely stillness of the water creating wonderful reflections. The stadium in the background is the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)

Accidental

First posted 28th October 2006

The Victorian Arts Centre Spire can be seen clearly here, this one was accidental as I zoomed whilst taking the shot. I actually love the effect with the streaking lights. Information about the Victorian Arts Centre can be found here.

Werribee Mansion

First posted 7th September 2007

The Werribee park and mansion are found in the Western suburbs of Melbourne, approx 45 minutes from the city. There is also a terrific open range zoo on the adjacent property. The mansion itself has a great history to it, some of which can be found here. There is also a very classy hotel at the rear of the mansion which includes a day spa. Information about this retreat can be found here. Earlier in the year I displayed many shots of the Helen lempriere sculpture award which is held in the grounds of this mansion. See the sculptures here.

Flinders Street Station

First posted 7th May 2007

Well every man and his dog have taken this shot, but how can I present a photoblog of Melbourne without it. Situated on the corner of Flinders Street and Swanston Street in Melbourne is Flinders Street Station. A very common meeting place for many as they ‘meet under the clocks’. Behind me is St. Pauls cathedral and on the corner across to the left is Federation Square.

Luna Park & Palais Theatre

First posted 22nd November 2006

On the left, Luna Park, on the right, Palais Theatre. This theatre has just been brought into the news again as the area it stands on is being labelled as the St Kilda triangle (as opposed to square), and is possibly to be redeveloped, although plans are still being discussed/argued. The trinagle lies opposite Luna Park and the beach and is prime land for the area.

Hamer Hall

First posted 15th November 2006

Part of The Victorian Arts Centre, this is Hamer Hall, (formerley the Melbourne Concert Hall). Located alongside the Yarra river, just on the city outskirts leading up St Kilda Road. It is the home for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, but is also used for music of all types including classical concerts, modern pop concerts, singers, bands, in fact anything. It is a very lush, grand venue for music, with fantastic acoustics.

City Museum

First posted 23rd August 2006

The City Museum. This is not Melbourne’s main Museum but rather a museum about the history of Melbourne. A great place for tourists to start if they want some history. It s located in Spring Street at the top end of the city.

Melbourne Town Hall

First posted 4th October 2006

This is the Melbourne Town Hall. Not your avergae town hall, it does not just hold council chambers and offices, but also has a lovely auditorium where during much of the year many performances are held. It was built between 1850 and 1854, and what you see here is only a small section, it continues on both sides. There is much more of it’s history located here if you’re interested.

Cathedral

First posted 6th September 2006

Recently I was in Bendigo for three nights. Bendigo is a large country town situated 2 hours North of Melbourne. This is the Sacred Heart Cathedral which fills the horizon from so many different angles. The picture is not completely sharp as I did not have a tripod and it was actually very dark, an hour after sunset. Hopefully, however, this shows how grand the building is as it rises up from the hill upon which it sits. I actually like the dark nature of the shot.

Golden Buildings

First posted 25th September 2006

One lovely night last week when the sun was setting behind me, these lovely golden reflections appeared on the city. I rushed home to get the camera just in time, as the colours disappeared whilst I was shooting. Taken from Williamstown looking East across Port Phillip Bay.

View from the Shrine

First posted 18th September 2006

We have a beautiful Shrine of Rememberance here in Melbourne which was designed to be viewed directly from St Kilda Road which runs into Elizabeth Street in the city. I may well post the Shrine itself on Wednesday, but today is the view back into the city from the Shrine. Taken last Monday at about 6:30pm. The Eureka tower sits on the left, straight ahead you can just make out the Victorian Arts Centre Spire.

MCG

First posted 11th September 2006

This shot, like my landscape posting on the 7th August, is from Princes Bridge. This shot, though, is on the other side of the bridge facing East. Here, we look down the Yarra river towards the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground). This part of the river is where the fish ( see ‘other’) were lined up for the Commonwealth Games earlier this year. On the right are the public school boathouses, used for their rowers, on the left is Birrarung Marr parklands.

Dark City

The lovely Yarra’s Edge, leading into Melbourne from the West. You can see the Bolte bridge in the distance on the right.

Skydeck

First posted 15th May 2007

I have shown you the Eureka tower before, but today is the opening of the new SKYDECK 88 and the EDGE. As shown in this picture, the skydeck is your standard viewing area, but the EDGE is a small room which moves in and out of the side of the building. As you go out the glass is opaque before suddenly becoming transparent and shocking you with the fact that you have nothing but 4.5cm of glass between you and the hard pavement so many stories below. I certainly plan to take a visit and promise to show you some shots from the observation deck. The Eureka tower is the largest residential building in the world, and the largest building of any kind in the Southern Hemisphere. There is also an observation dek on the Rialto building in Melbourne. For more information about the skydeck and the edge please visit here.

Ernst & Young Building

First posted 4th May 2007

This is the Ernst & Young building, found on the corner of Flinders Street and Exhibition street in the city. I have shot it through the entrance to Federation square at dusk.

Forum Theatre

First  posted 20th April 2007

This is the Forum Theatre on the corner of Flinders Street and Russell Street, here in the city of Melbourne. I was in here recently for the ‘completetion of filming’ party for Spike Jonze directed “Where The Wild Things Are”, which comes out in October 2008. (Playtone Productions – Tom Hanks’ company). The theatre has great decor with interesting features galore. It is curently home to some of the Melbourne Comedy Festival events. More information on the venue can be found here. Yes, the tallest building in Melbourne, the Eureka Tower. This place has an extremely ‘way-out’ foyer which I will shoot and post one day. It is located on the opposite side of the Yarra in Southbank Boulevard. You can see a daytime image on my ‘places’ post of 26th July 2006.

Melbourne Central Cone

First posted on 2nd August 2006

Melbourne Central cone. The roof which adourns this shopping centre in the middle of town. The old building is the former lead pipe and shot factory which I now assume is offices. It looks just as interesting from the outside of the centre.

Eureka Tower
