Where am I?

First posted 1st May 2007

Today is the monthly theme day from ‘Daily City Photoblogs” Today’s theme is to show a photo from your own city which may make visitors think they are in the wrong city. I have posted another shot of Geelong pier (a small city South West of Melbourne) which reminds me a lot of Brighton, England. There are several piers in Brighton, and I’m sure you could see some here at Brighton Daily photo.

Stillness

First posted 2nd December 2006

I have shown a wider shot of this lovely river previously here. This closer shot, taken at the same time shows the lovely stillness of the water creating wonderful reflections. The stadium in the background is the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)

Brighton Bathing Boxes

Clunes Countryside

First posted 2nd June 2007

About 90 minutes North West of Melbourne is the country town of Clunes. Here is a sample of the lovely landscapes you can experience up in the area.  At last the drought seems to be breaking. Great to see the lovely green grass back with us.

Flinders

First posted 20th November 2006

Recently had the pleasure of visiting Flinders, a lovely quiet township approx. 100mins South-East of Melbourne. It lies on the tip of the Mornington Peninsula and is popular as a holiday destination. Very natural, very calming, a great spot. This is just one of many vantage points looking out to the lovely seas.

Night Sky

Two Hundred Photos!

First posted 16th May 2007

Today marks my 200th Post here at this current address. I started with two other blogspot addresses, but quickly moved over to my own domain shortly after. I have enjoyed posting my photos and hope yopu enjoy looking at them regularly. Certainly my visitor numbers have incresed greatly since those humble beginnings. I particularly enjoy the work of all the other daily photobloggers who you can find here. Thanks, and here’s to another 200 shots from this fabulous city of Melbourne, Australia!

Florence on the Yarra

First posted 13th May 2007

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO ALL! I spent yesterday with my mother celebrating on board “Florence on the Yarra”, a restaurant ferry that drives down the Yarra river as you enjoy a nice meal or a simple cup of coffee. There is an indoor area, or on nice days like yesterday, you can sit comfortably upstairs and see the great views of inner city Melbourne.

River Reflections

First posted 28th April 2007

Night reflections on the Yarra river passing through the city. The reflection shows the Victorian Arts Centre Spire, the boathouses and the Eureka tower, amongst other buildings.

Festive City

First posted 16th April 2007

The city is celebrating comedy at the moment with the Melbourne Comedy Festival drawing large crowds every year. Along the Yarra river are many temporary venues and as I have already mentioned, there is also this new ‘giant sky wheel’. In the centre of the picture you can also see Deborah Halpern’s “Angel” mosaic sculpture. I have a close up shot of this on my Sculpture and art pages.

St. Kilda

From St Kilda beach across Port Phillip Bay.

Westgate Bridge

First Posted 11th April 2007

Taken during the clear evening of last night. From Spotswood under the Westgate bridge to the city. This bridge links the city of Melbourne with the western suburbs. It is this high to allow containers ships easy access to the ports. You can see the container cranes under the bridge on the left.

From Brighton

First posted 22nd March 2007

Good enough to draw. The fanatastic view from Brighton looking back towards the city. On the right you can make out the bathing boxes. If you use the search button, you can also see a close-up of one of the boxes.

Station Pier

First posted 13th November 2006

Ever wonder how you can get from Victoria to Tasmania? Well you can swim (if you’re Susie Maroney), catch a plane, or take this, the “Spirit of Tasmania’. This would be my preference as you get to take your car with you. Daily trips run from Station pier, Port Melbourne to Devenport, Tasmania, the trip taking most of the day (or night). There are 3 ships to my understanding which are fully identical, allowing one to be leaving Tasmania at the same time as one is leaving Victoria. Full information on the boats, fares and the like can be found at the official website here.

Altona Beach

First posted 6th November 2006

Well I gave you a little example on Friday with the kite surfer, today the entire landscape. If you look closely, you’ll see the guy at the back has his board in the air.  Again taken down at Altona Beach on a sufficiently windy day.

Rowing

First posted 30th October 2006

Looks like a good way to spend the afternoon, rowing down the Yarra River. There are many clubs which base themselves right in at the city where there are many private school rowing club houses.

City at night

First posted 23rd October 2006

View from Southbank across Princes Bridge towards Federation Square, St Paul’s cathedral is on the left, the Yarra river is in the foreground.

Red Patterns

First posted 16th October 2006

Another shot taken at the Cranbourne Botanical Gardens during it’s opening of the new ‘Australian Garden’ earlier in the year. I hope to return over Summer and see how much larger all the plants are. This is just one section of the gardens which is representative of the red earth found in outback Australia, it’s called the red sand garden. More information about the gardens can be found here.

Busy Bay 2

First posted 9th October 2006

Port Phillip Bay again, shot on the same day as last weeks ‘landscape’ image. The birds are almost like cartoon characters, watching as the man in the boat comes back in from a day out on the bay. ‘Bird watching!’

Busy Bay

First posted 2nd October 2006

Saturday afternoon was a busy day out on Port Phillip Bay. This was at about half time during the AFL footy grand final. (Where West Coast beat Sydney by one point ….. last year it was the exact opposite, and one point is fairly rare). There was a blimp in the sky (which I will post on another day), helicopters, large container ships, small yachts, rowing boats and much more. This large ship had just passed under the Westgate Bridge and was heading out into the bay. The yacht was just packing up after the day out.

Golden Buildings

First posted 25th September 2006

One lovely night last week when the sun was setting behind me, these lovely golden reflections appeared on the city. I rushed home to get the camera just in time, as the colours disappeared whilst I was shooting. Taken from Williamstown looking East across Port Phillip Bay.

View from the Shrine

First posted 18th September 2006

We have a beautiful Shrine of Rememberance here in Melbourne which was designed to be viewed directly from St Kilda Road which runs into Elizabeth Street in the city. I may well post the Shrine itself on Wednesday, but today is the view back into the city from the Shrine. Taken last Monday at about 6:30pm. The Eureka tower sits on the left, straight ahead you can just make out the Victorian Arts Centre Spire.

MCG

First posted 11th September 2006

This shot, like my landscape posting on the 7th August, is from Princes Bridge. This shot, though, is on the other side of the bridge facing East. Here, we look down the Yarra river towards the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground). This part of the river is where the fish ( see ‘other’) were lined up for the Commonwealth Games earlier this year. On the right are the public school boathouses, used for their rowers, on the left is Birrarung Marr parklands.

Williamstown

First posted 4th September 2006

The beautiful view, just 5 mins walk from my house, from Williamstown across to the Westgate Bridge. The city of Melbourne is just out of the picture to the right. This bridge connects the Western Suburbs to the city and beyond, and is this tall to allow the large container ships to come directly into the city. I see this view nearly every day and never get sick of it.

Dark City

First posted 7th August 2006

Dark City. The Yarra river with Flinders Street Station on right, Southgate on left. Looking west from Princes Bridge, near the Hamer Hall.
