Somers Camp

First posted 4th June 2007

Somers camp, located on the Mornington peninsula has been around for years. Kids get to enjoy, rope skills, abseiling, archery, boating, cooking, art, dancing and much more. On the way down to the beach are these boats all ready for the next days activities. I was at the camp yesterday visiting my son who is having the time of his life.

Birrarung Marr

First posted 27th August 2008

Adjacent to the many office buildings and skyscrapers in the city of Melbourne are the Birrarung Marr parklands, alongside the Yarra river. The parklands host the Giant Sky Wheel, many sculptures including Angel shown on my sculpture and art pages, and also the Artplay building. In this shot you can also see the Victorian Arts Centre spire, the Eureka tower, and the back of Federation Square.

From the west

First posted 20th August 2008

My last post showed you a close up of an old crane. Today the whole view from the South-Western end of the city looking up the Yarra towards the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, with the crane and boat sheds in the foreground. The building with the blue light shining up on the clouds is the Rialto.

Heading In

First posted 13th August 2008

Heading into the city across the railway tracks. This shot shows some of the city from the South East corner, shot from a bridge heading away from the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Nice sky

First posted 21st July 2008

A nice sky over the newport power station and westgate bridge last week.

Bathing Box

First posted 18th July 2008

In a South eastern suburb of melbourne lies Brighton, and much photographed is a lovely row of beach bathing boxes. This is obviously just one of the many brightly coloured ‘changing rooms’, I have showed more around the site, please use the search bar.

From the end

First posted 16th July 2008

Another shot from the end of the St Kilda pier. This shot looks North towards the city across the water. The cafe I showed yesterday is behind me.

Westgate revisited

First posted 27th June 2008

You can see the Westgate bridge on this website many times by using the search bar, but such a formidable bridge deserves a revisit every now and then. The Westgate bridge connectes the city of Melbourne to the Western suburbs. This shot was taken on the south side of the bridge, on the east side of the Yarra river (looking North West).

Night view from Williamstown

First posted 22nd June 2008

Taken from just behind yesterdays shot of Liston Tennis Club, on the edge of the Commonwealth Reserve in Williamstown. This is the best view of Melbourne from anywhere, across the bay, with the boats in the foreground and the buildings on the horizon. Over the last ten years or so Williamstown has become one of the most popular destinations for a weekend outing in Melbourne, with many a family heading to one of the great cafes or restaurants in the main street.

Pelican

First posted 7th June 2008

A pelican sitting comfortably as the world goes by.

Viewbank View

First posted 4th June 2008

Another suburb in Melbourne is Viewbank, which lies about 40 minutes out from the city. Yesterday the area was blanketed in a thick layer of fog. This is the view from the roadside in the centre of the suburb yesterday.

Orange Morning

First posted 23rd May 2008

This morning over the city at about 7:15am. Lovely colour, lovely calm scene. Even the hot air balloons were up above the city.

Maersk Drammen

First posted 12th May 2008

The Maersk Drammen container ship coming under the Westgate Bridge a couple of weeks ago. Notice the workmen on the cage under the bridge.

Sundown

First posted 24th April 2008

We have had some controlled burning around Melbourne recently which has caused some areas to be rather smoggy. Last night as the sun went down, a rather lovely haze was created. Later in the night the moon was quite radient, almost red in colour. This is the sun as it went down last night, taken from the middle of the westgate bridge.

Dusk

First posted 15th April 2008

Heading towards the Westgate Bridge earlier tonight, the sun in my eyes. This photo was taken by my nine year old daughter as we made our way home towards the setting sun.

Sunbury Shack

First posted 14th April 2008

An old run down shack on the outskirts of Subury, a western suburb of Melbourne, Vcitoria.

Earth Hour

First posted 30th March 2008

Last night Melbourne joined “Earth Hour“, the ‘global movement’ which started in Sydney last year. All lights were asked to be turned off for the hour between 8 and 9pm. Certainly the city was a lot dimmer, but as you can see, many lights still shone. This shot is from the Williamstown foreshore across the bay to the city. I hope you joined in and helped the global warming cause!

Herring Island

First posted 8th March 2008

About a kilometre down the Yarra river out of the city lies Herring Island. The only way of getting to the island is by this small punt run by Parks Victoria. Quite often the island is home to art exhibitions, housed in their small exhibition space. Details about the current exhibitions can be found here. The punt costs just $2, the exhibition is free or you can give a donation.

Leaving

First posted 22nd February 2008

Well I didn’t know when I posted the Queen Victoria yesterday, that it was leaving last night. Williamstown was alive with people looking across the bay to see the big ship leave with a fanfare of fireworks AND a full moon! Links to details on the cruiser are repeated here for your information: Queen Victoria. There is a web cam on board and you can find the link to this here, and a virtual tour here.

Queen Victoria

First posted 21st February 2008

Currently docked at Station Pier where the Spirit of Tasmania also docks, is the large Cunard ocean cruiser Queen Victoria. There is a web cam on board and you can find the link to this here, and there is also a virtual tour here. It certainly makes quite an impression on the skyline.

Another Bridge

First posted 2nd December 2007

Another bridge today. This is the Westgate Bridge which runs over the entrance to the Yarra, allowing the Eastern and Western suburbs to meet. Container ships pass under here regularly in and out of the ports of Melbourne. They pass by Williamstown on their way out to the ocean.

Moon

First posted 29th August 2007

Just before the lunar eclipse last night, here is the moon above the Westagate Bridge. Unfortunately clouds later spoilt much of the vision for the lunar eclipse from Melbourne, other states fairing much better.

Telstra Dome and new Observation Wheel

First posted 15th June 2007

Another sporting stadium shot from the Eureka Tower Skydeck 88, this one is the Telstra Dome, home of Friday night footy. In fact I’m off there tonight to watch the almighty Hawks beat Carlton in this weeks round of AFL. See those big white chopsticks in the background? Well not many people are aware, but Melbourne is soon to get it’s own version of London’s big Eye. This is separate to the temproary Big Sky wheel which I have shown before. This new Southern Star observation wheel is going to have 21 enclosed cabins and will be approx 120 metres off the ground. It is due to open before the end of next year. More information on this new attraction can be found here at the waterfront city website. UPDATE : Did I say Hawthorn would beat Carlton, sorry, I meant to say THRASH! Final score Hawthorn 180, Carlton 80.

Fed Square

First posted 14th June 2007

More from the Eureka Tower Skydeck 88. Here I have shown Federation Square in the centre of the city. The modern architecture was much debated about, especially in consideration on it’s close proximity to St Pauls cathedral and the Forum theatre which I have shown here. But now after several years the square is always busy and has become a great meeting place. Notice the circle of people surrounding a street performer.

The ‘G’

First posted 13th June 2007

More from the Eureka Tower Skydeck 88. Today I have zoomed in on the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG or simply, ‘the G’). Every week during the Australian Football League (AFL) season several weekly matches are played here, as are many other major sporting events. Melbourne is indeed the home of Australian sport, just yesterday it was strengthened with the new teammelbourne website. In the distance of this shot are firstly the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and then the Dandenong Ranges (known as the Dandenongs). These ranges are great for day trips from Melbourne with many interesting shops and cafes hidden amongst the great ferns and trees. More information about the dandenongs can be found here.

Opposite

First posted 12th June 2007

As Promised here is my first shot from the new Eureka Tower Skydeck 88. In fact it is the opposite shot from yesterday, showing the Giant Sky Wheel where I took yesterdays shot from! Also in this shot is the Circus OZ tent, they are appearing in Melbourne between the 20th June and the 15th July 2007. I saw them perform in the same spot here at Birrarung Marr parklands two years ago and I highly recommend the show. Full details can be found at their own website here. Behind the wheel you can just make out the Federation Bells sculpture. More from the edge tomorrow.

From the giant sky wheel

First posted 11th June 2007

I’ve shown you the temporary ‘Giant Sky Wheel’ before, but today is the view from the top. This last weekend in Melbourne has been a long weekend with today being a holiday. I have spent the weekend like a tourist, staying in a city hotel and eating food every few minutes! On Saturday I rode this Giant sky wheel with my kids as the sun was about to set. On the Sunday I went up the Eureka tower to the new observation deck and also in ‘the edge’. I will show you some photos from within the tower over the next few days. You can see the Eureka tower in todays shot (the tallest building), and also here, where I have shown an arrow displaying ‘The edge’. My post of the 15th May 2007 has the information on this wonderful new attraction to Melbourne.

Away

First posted 31st May 2007

Looking away from the City towards the East. You can see the Yarra, the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground), part of Federation Square, the Rod Laver Arena, and off in the distance, the Dandenong Ranges. The spire in the foreground is on top of Flinders Street Station.
