After the fires

First posted 22nd June 2009

After the fires on what has become known as ‘black saturday’, February 7th 2009. These are some of the burnt out hills on the road between Whittlesea and Kinglake West. As mentioned, it’s great to see so much positive work happening in the area, with many re-building their lives.

Clearing

First posted 21st June 2009

A second shot from my motorbike ride to Kinglake on Friday. This one shows an area of burnt out trees with others lopped and piled in front. Obviously dangerous trees need to be felled whilst at the same time, others are starting to re-sprout in various road side forests. Best wishes to all who live in the area, especially those currently living in very cold wintery conditions, many in caravans or tents.

Near Kinglake

First posted 20th June 2009

Yesterday I rode my bike from Williamstown around to Whittlesea and into Kinglake. Kinglake and surrounding areas were some of the heaviest hit towns in Victorias February bushfires. That day it hit 46.4 degrees celsius, (see my shot from the day, Saturday 7th February, here), and the result of course, was many deaths, huge loss of housing and devastation allround. The area now is busy with workmen clearing, repairing, re-developing, installing and much more. To start, a shot from the road heading towards Kinglake showing nature fighting back and regenerating itself, more over the next few days.

Seven Creeks

The not so flowing ‘Seven Creeks’ in Euroa, country Victoria. Still, the cockatoos enjoy the surrounding trees.

Burnt Trees

Burnt Out

First posted 19th March 2009

Burnt out trees from ‘Black Saturday’ near Clonbinane just off the Hume Highway. The bushfires in Victoria over recent weeks are now all out after some good rain. Donations still can be made at the Red Cross for the many people who have lost everything.

Lake Mokoan Revisited

First posted 3rd March 2009

Another shot of Lake Mokoan near Wangaratta today. I first showed the lake back on the 21st August 2006 here. Today, as mentioned yesterday, the lake is much less a lake. This is the small area of the lake that still retains a tiny amount of water.

Empty Lake

First posted 2nd March 2009

Three years or more of drought in country Victoria has taken it’s toll. Of course lately fires have torn through the countryside with devastating results. Whilst no fires have been right on the doorstep of Wangaratta, Lake Mokoan has all but dried up. The trees in the centre of this picture are usually under water, currently they are as dry as can be. Tomorrow looks threatening again with very high winds and also high temperatures again throughout the state. Again, I urge you, especially international visitors, to give generously to those who have lost everything. Donations can be made via the Red Cross, here.

Warragul

First posted 22nd November 2008

An hour and 30 minutes out of Melbourne is the country town of Warragul. The hills still look surprisingly green after a distinct lack of water in Victoria over the last couple of years.

Yarra Glen

First posted 31st July 2008

Approximately an hour and a quarter North East of Melbourne is Yarra Glen. It’s a small town with many lovely antique stores and great food stops. This shot shows an old corrugated iron shed and was taken on the hill that leads down to Yarra Glen from the West.

Flinders Pier

First posted 20th June 2008

My final shot in a series from the Mornington Peninsula. Today more from Flinders. This is the Flinders pier, just around the corner from the Flinders Golf Club which I showed yesterday. Flinders is about 100 minutes South East of the city of Melbourne.

Flinders Golf Club

More from my trip to the Mornington Peninsula today. This is one of the terrific holes of the Flinders Golf Club. Quite a view, it’s almost like a hole from a made up course in a video game. It certainly would be relaxing playing golf on this course. Flinders is about 10 minutes further out of the city of Melbourne past Balnarring and Point Leo.

Balnarring Pier

First posted 18th June 2008

Another shot from Balnarring beach today, to follow up on yesterdays photo of a racehorse taking a swim. This is the small pier on Balnarring Beach, which is on the Mornington Peninsula about 90 minutes out of the main city of Melbourne. I shot this at dusk, the skies were actually quite dark, which enabled a longer than normal exposure time.

Balnarring Beach

Also down on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria is the lovely area of Balnarring, which also includes a beach area. Racehorses are bathed there six days a week as part of their training regime. This was last Thursday morning at about 7:15am.

Road to Point Leo

First posted 16th June 2008

Yesterday I showed the Point Leo life saving Club. Today the road that leads down to the beach. The pine needles currently create this lovely colour on the sides of the road.

Point Leo Surf Lifesaving Club

First posted 15th June 2008

Down on the Mornington Peninsula are some lovely small towns with some great beaches. I had the pleasure of spending a short time down there recently and will share various photos of the area over the next few days. Today I have shown the Point Leo life saving Club including the Tich Taylor tower. It was raining whilst I was on the beach, but surfers were still out enjoying the waves behind me.

Torquay Beach

First posted 3rd May 2008

Torquay beach last Thursday morning as the sun came up. Torquay is approx 80 minutes out of Melbourne down the Great Ocean Road.

Rockpool

Small rockpool we explored over the long weekend at Aireys Inlet beach, southern Victoria, Australia.

Split Point Lighthouse

First posted 24th March 2008

I have shown the Split Point Lighthouse once before here, but I was back at Aireys Inlet on a brighter day yesterday and took this shot from a small path through the bushes. The lighthouse was featurd on the popular childrens TV show “Round the twist“. It is located on the beach at Aireys inlet on the South Coast of Victoria about 100 minutes out of Melbourne.

Tarradale

Just south of Malmsbury which I showed on Friday, is an even smaller town, Taradale. This is a bridge you can spot as you come down into the town on the Calder Highway.

Corrugated Window

First posted 18th October 2009

A closer look at the side of yesterdays corrugated iron house. Not far from the ‘field of yellow‘ I spotted this house completely covered in corrugated iron. I love all the shapes and colours of the differently aged iron. Near Monegetta, north of Sunbury.
