AC/DC Lane
"AC/DC Lane" Friday 5th September 2008
Another of the many interesting laneways in the city of Melbourne. This one is AC/DC lane, which runs off Flinders Lane. At the end is "The Alley Bar" up on the left is "Fifteen", Jamie Olivers restaurant which was recently burnt in a fire, thus the boarding on the windows. The day after the fire, Chris Cheneys band "The Living End" played here for lucky listerners of a National broadcaster, Triple J. The laneway is, of course named after legndary Australian band AC/DC. Don't forget your shoes.

"Bench at night" Wednesday 3rd September 2008
"Federation Square" Monday 1st September 2008
The beautiful St. Patrick's Cathedral, on the corner of Gisborne Street and Cathedral Place at the top end of the city. There is a great website outlining the history of the church, the mass times and much more here at stpatrickscathedral.org.au
There are a row of these benches on the side of Federation Square, all with great views across the Yarra river to the Victorian Arts Centre. The coloured building in this shot is part of Federation Square, The BMW Edge theatrette.
Melbourne used to have it's city square, now it has Federation Square. Always busy, the square is a great meeting point for many people when visiting the city. You can see the square from the Eureka tower here, and a close up of the glassed area at the back here.
Recital Centre
Tree Lights
"Recital Centre" Saturday 30th August 2008
"Crown promenade" Monday 25th August 2008
"China Town" Sunday 24th August 2008
The new Melbourne Recital Centre, still under construction. The same building also houses the new home for the Melbourne Theatre Company. I showed the building once before here during the day time.
Further along the river from Southgate is the Crown Promenade (outside the Crown Casino). Lighting the way are these lovely trees with fairy lights. It certainly makes for a very festive feel, and is very popular with tourists and weekenders.
It seems appropriate with the Beijing Olympics finishing today, that I post something from China Town here in Melbourne. I took this on request of a regular American visitor of melbourneinphotos.com, Rachel, hope you like it. China Town runs down Little Bourke Street in the city. It is soon to be host to the Asian Food Festival which runs from the 1st to the 30th of September 2008. Details about China town can be found here, details on the food festival can be found here.

Red umbrellas at Federation Square in the centre of Melbourne.
Located in the Birrarung Marr parklands, behind Federation Square is this building which houses Artplay. It is a unique space for childrens art activities. Full details on the programs can be found here.
An old unused railway station at the bottom of the Newport Mill.

"St Kilda Pier cafe" Tuesday 15th July 2008
"Luna Park at night" Monday 14th July 2008
The old Victorian Railway workshops in Melbourne Road, Spotswood. Further behind this old building are the lovely new rail workshops.
You can see this cafe n the background of this shot taken during the 2006 Commonwealth games. This shot is the refurbished (after a fire) cafe at dusk.
I've shown a close up of the entrance to Luna park here, but today a night shot. Unfortuanetly as I walked up to take the shot the lights which colour the face were switched off. Perhaps I can show these lights another time. Information about the fun park can be found here.

"Waverley Park" Monday 30th June 2008
"Pentridge Village again" Wednesday 25th June 2008
The old Barkly Theatre in Barkly Street Footscray. Hopefully about to be renovated to it's former glory.
Out in Mulgrave is this former football ground of the AFL. It now is the training ground for the Hawthorn Football Club, who's old home I showed here recently. Around the ground is new housing. You can read an article from "The Age" about the development here.
Yesterday I showed you the main entrance to the old Pentridge prison here. Today, some of the works going on in behind the doors. As mentioned the old prison is being turned into housing, some old buildings mixing with the new. It's not my idea of comfortable housing, but if you're interested, information on the development can be found here.

"Princess Theatre" Friday 16th May 2008
"Royal Exhibition Building" Monday 28th April 2008
Pentridge Prison or Pentridge Village? You make up your own mind. This once famous prison is now being turned into housing... apartment blocks sitting on top of each other, much like the old cells of the prison would have once done. I will show you some of the work behind this impressive entrance tomorrow. Information on the development can be found here.
The Princess Theatre, located in Spring Street, Melbourne. Currently the theatre is home to the well known musical "Guys and Dolls" starring the wonderful Garry McDonald. The show runs until at least the 10th June 2008.
Here is Melbourne's lovely old Royal Exhibition building, and in the foreground is the entrance to the Melbourne Museum. They are found at 11 Nicholson Street, Carlton, just out of the city.

"Geelong beach pool" Saturday 29th March 2008
"Geelong Adventure Park" Friday 7th March 2008
Now I have good reason to be a Hawthorn Football club supporter, I was born and raised in Hawthorn until I left home at 19. At the moment Hawks supporters are extra happy with the team having scored five wins out of five games, (there are 22 rounds this year in the Australian Football League - AFL), and are second on the ladder only behind Geelong, (last years winners) this week on percentage. You can become a member of the club by joining here, or purchase great club merchandise here. Todays photo shows their original home in Linda Crescent, Hawthorn. Next Sunday the Hawks play Richmond at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
On Eastern beach down in Geelong is a salt water pool right on the foreshore. Behind is also an area of the ocean water surrounded by a fence with diving boards and other platforms. Great on a sunny day for the whole family. Geelong is about 45 minutes South West of Melbourne. You can see the Geelong pier here, and the adventure park here.
In the Greater city of Geelong is the Geelong Adventure park. Much like all it's bigger brothers and sisters up on the Gold Coast, the park has many rides, water slides, boats and more. It's a great day out for the family. In this photo you can see the newest additions to the park, the six lane aqua racer and "Bonitos Bay". Take your bathers Mum's and Dad's, you're sure to want to join in. More attractions are opening later in the year, the "River Torrent" sounds great. Full price details at their own site here.

"Lentil as Anything" Friday 1st February 2008
This is the new home of the Melbourne Theatre Company, and also of the Melbourne Recital Centre, in Sturt Street South Melbourne. You can find more information about the project here in "The Age" newspaper article. There is a webcam following the construction, you can find it at the bottom of this page.
This is the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, an exhibition space just out of the city at 111 Sturt Street. (Just down the road from the Victorian Arts Centre and also from the new home of the Melbourne Theatre Company, (which I will show tomorrow). You can find out about their current exhibitions here. Admission is FREE. You can see the chimney from yesterdays post in the background.
There once was a band called "mental as anything", in fact I think they reformed last year. Well this restaurant in St Kilda is called "Lentil as Anything". It hosts vegetarian cuisine with a philosophy of 'pay want you think the meal is worth'. Tonight we had lovely burgers before music entertained the passers by outside. I discussed what we would pay with the kids, and then quietly slipped the amount into the box with a slit.
