Rings of Jupiter

House in the sky

"Rings Of Jupiter" Tuesday 28th November 2006

"House in the sky" Tuesday 21st November 2006

I have shown you "Rings of Saturn" with my posting of 26th September 2006. Here a similar sculpture by the same artist, Inge King. This is found at the National Gallery at Federation Square, and is entitled "Rings of Jupiter"
"House in the sky" is located on the Western Ring Road where it meets the Princes Freeway. As there is nowhere to stop it is difficult to get a decent photo. I took this shot with one hand and without looking whilst driving! The sculpture was designed by Brearley Middleton Architects and won the Urban Design Architecture Award from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in 2002.

"Windsocks" Tuesday 31st October 2006

Found in the central city parklands of Birrarung Marr are these lovely 'Federation Bells'. The following information is taken from the plaque next to the artwork. "Commissioned by the Melbourne Festival on behalf of the Victorian Government, Federation bells are a unique set of harmonically tuned bells that are a gift to Melbourne and Australia, and are a lasting symbol of the 2001 Centennary of Federation celebrations." Designed by Anton Hassel and acoustic designer Dr. Neil McLachlan. More info here.
Now I'm not into horse racing, but the Melbourne Cup is apparently the race 'that stops a nation'. Whatever it is, any event that gives you a public holiday is a good event on my terms! Delta Blues was this years winner. This is my daughters little statue which now has a new name.
These windsocks are located in Deer Park where the Western Ring Road meets the Western Highway. There are more than what are shown here and continue on either side of the freeway. Just recently I noticed they are now lit at night and look spectacular! I will show an illuminated image on another day soon. They were constructed for the City of Brimbank (one of the local councils) and more information can be found here if you are interested.
Blowhole and Bunjil Reed Vessel with moon

"Reed Vessel with moon" Tuesday 17th October 2006

"Three businessmen who brought their own lunch" Tuesday 3rd October 2006

Now I know I've shown both these sculptures previously, but I realised today that the wonderful "Blowhole' was not on my 'Sculpture and Art' page. I am revisiting today to rectify this, (and besides I love both these sculptures). My previous view of the 'blowhole' was for the 'circle' theme on my Photo Friday page. This new view not only shows 'Blowhole" by Duncan Stemler but also "Bunjil' ( the eagle) by Bruce Armstrong in the lower left corner. More information about Bunjil can be found on the sculpture and Art page at my 5th September posting.
I have posted this full sculpture called 'Reed Vessel' previously on the 'sculpture and art' page (See 12th September 2006), today a close up. Yes that is the moon, and no I didn't add it later! The sculpture is by Virginia King of New Zealand. More information about the sculpture can be found here.
This sculpture is found in the heart of Melbourne city on the corner of Swanston & Bourke Streets. It is of three founders of Melbourne ; Batman, Swanston and Hoddle. It was created in 1994 by artists Alison Weaver and Paul Quinn. I love it's sense of fun with the very amusing faces. They seem to be in bewilderment as they watch all who come past, and the surrounding architecture all around. My little drawing on my melbourneinphotos button is based on these guys.

"Reed Vessel" Tuesday 12th September 2006

2005 - 2006 Sculpture by well known artist Inge King. Inge has also created the lovely "Forward Surge" outside the Victorian Arts Centre, which I will post another day. Inge was born in Germany but came to Australia in 1951. In 2000 she created a work for a new freeway entitled "The Sentinel", not my favourite work but it certainly adds interest on the dull freeway. One of her sculptures can also be found at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra. "Rings of Saturn" can be found at Heide park.

Yet another sculpture from the Docklands area of Melbourne - there is so much wonderful art down there. This one is simply entitled 'Cow up a tree', located on Harbour Esplanade. It is by artist John Kelly. It has a great story behind it, I highly recommend you look here for the explanation, it's just 2 short paragraphs, but explains a lot. The Bolte Bridge makes another appearance in the background.

There is so much lovely art around Melbourne, this 'sculpture' category is certainly one of my easiest and my most favourite. This week I have posted 'Reed Vessel", another beautiful sculpture in the docklands area. It is by artist Virginia King from New Zealand. It's themes are migration, survival and the sea. On the side are many sayings such as..."The quality of fog is that it has style but no detail". I took many lovely shots this night and will surely post these over the coming weeks. The bridge in the background is the Bolte bridge which connects , on the left, the Westagte freeway and bridge (which you can also just see at the very back on the left), to the Northern suburbs of Melbourne.

"Silence" Tuesday 29th August 2006

"Red Night" Tuesday 22nd August 2006

I love this beautiful eagle sculpture and how he glances over everyone coming and going from the city. It is by artist Bruce Armstrong. More information about it's Aboriginal heritage can be found here Bunjil. It is 25 metres tall, but here looks as big as a skyscraper. To some aboriginal tribes, he is a supreme God represented as an eagle.

This sculpture is called 'Silence' and is made up of many segments. (Some of which are not shown here). It can be found at the Docklands, here in Melbourne and is by artist Adrian Mauriks. 2002. At night with lights, the 'blobs' really make a strong impression, as if they are exploding out of the ground. I will surely be posting further shots of this lovely sculpture in the not too distant future.

Close-up of "Red Centre", Federation Square . At night this time. See full sculpture on previous posting. Konstantin Dimopoulos.

"Angel' A mosaic sculptural piece by Deborah Halpern which lives alongside the Yarra river in Birrarung Marr parklands. This used to live outside the National Gallery Of Victoria, but has moved to it's nicer home just down from Federation Square.
'Red Centre' A beautiful sculpture found at Federation Square in the heart of the city, directly across from Flinders Street Station. Artist : Konstantin Dimopoulos.
I O U Sculpture, Docklands. The reflections are amazing at night as you can see. Artist : Mikala Dwyer.
